Catalina Island Adventures: Your Essential Travel Guide

Catalina Island sits off the coast of California, and within a short boat ride, you can reach this popular SoCal getaway. It’s a must-visit destination, known for its unique history, location, and overall relaxing vibe. In this guide, we’ll share what to do and tips so you can plan your next trip to Catalina!

Getting There & Around

The most common way to get to Catalina is by ferry, from departure ports such as Long Beach, Dana Point, or San Pedro (and also Newport Beach). The ferry ride takes roughly an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes, depending on the route.

Alternatively, a helicopter can get you there in about 15 minutes, though it is considerably more expensive (e.g. $169 one way on Maverick).

Once you arrive in Avalon, most local travel is done by golf carts (“autoettes”), bicycles, shuttle or taxi services, or on foot. Cars are extremely rare because Avalon is the only city in California permitted to limit vehicle numbers and size on its streets. There is a long waitlist (often 20–25 years) to bring a full-sized private vehicle to the island, and even then strict size/weight limits apply. This regulation helps preserve Catalina’s natural beauty by reducing noise and pollution, creating a safer, more walkable environment that maintains the island’s charm for both locals and visitors.

Top Adventures & Activities

Catalina Island offers a wide range of outdoor and water activities, including snorkeling and scuba diving in the renowned Lover’s Cove. This protected area allows marine life to thrive, where you can spot local California species such as Garibaldi fish, octopuses, eels, and the California sheephead. If you’d rather stay above the water, try kayaking or paddleboarding.
Prefer to stay completely dry? Take a ziplining tour or hike popular trails like Hermit Gulch and Garden to Sky. You can also spot Catalina’s unique wildlife like bison, bald eagles, and foxes on a Jeep eco-tour. After a day of exploring, unwind at one of the island’s beaches or treat yourself to a relaxing spa day. For a deeper appreciation of Catalina’s rich past, consider joining a local history tour.

Tips for Planning Your Trip

Most visitors spend 2–3 days on Catalina Island, giving them plenty of time to explore without feeling rushed, while some people do enjoy a one day trip. A one-night trip is possible, but it doesn’t allow you to truly experience everything the island has to offer. If you plan to visit Two Harbors, consider staying 4–5 days for a more relaxed pace. Adventure seekers can take on the Trans-Catalina Trail, a popular three-day backpacking route.

Catalina’s weather mirrors that of coastal California mainland, warm and sunny from May through October, and cooler during the winter months. Summer is the most popular season, bringing both the best weather and the largest crowds, especially on weekends when most visitors plan their getaways.
