1. Delta Air Lines - North America
Best SANDMARC pairing: Backpack + any Hybrid Sling
Carry-on bag
22 x 14 x 9 in
No general weight limit*
Personal item
1 small bag
Must fit under the seat
Fits comfortably within the 22 x 14 x 9 in limit, with no general weight restriction on most domestic and intercontinental flights.
Fits easily under the seat. Smallest profile — best for minimal daily carry alongside the backpack.
Fits under the seat. Room for a mirrorless setup (Fuji/Leica) plus a 12 in iPad.
Fits under the seat. Largest capacity — holds a full-frame DSLR with an extra lens plus a 14 in MacBook.
*Exceptions: Beijing/Shanghai 22 lbs max, Singapore 15 lbs max. Personal item and carry-on bag are counted separately on Delta, so backpack + any sling travels free in Main Cabin without checked-bag fees.
2. Lufthansa - Europe
Best SANDMARC pairing: Backpack + 3L Sling
Weight watch: Lufthansa strictly enforces a 17.6 lbs cap on carry-on bags in Economy — pack accordingly.
Carry-on bag
21.5 x 15.75 x 9 in
18 lbs max, Economy
Personal item
15.7 x 11.8 x 3.9 in
Must fit under the seat
Dimensions (20 x 14 x 6 in) sit well within the 21.5 x 15.75 x 9 in limit — but weigh it before boarding, since Economy's 17.6 lbs cap is strictly checked.
Fits comfortably under the 15.7 x 11.8 x 3.9 in personal item limit — the safest sling choice on Lufthansa.
Depth (6 in) technically exceeds the 3.9 in personal-item rule on paper. Soft-sided, so it typically fits under the seat unstuffed — but it's the stricter call of the three.
Depth (5 in) also exceeds the 3.9 in rule on paper. Soft-sided construction usually clears under-seat checks when not overpacked.
Maximum checked bag dimension: 62 linear in. The 3L sling is the surest personal-item fit; the 6L and 9L work in practice but carry more gate-check risk with a strict agent.
3. Emirates - Asia
Best SANDMARC pairing depends on cabin class
Economy warning: Emirates limits Economy to one single carry-on piece total. You cannot bring the backpack and a sling on board as two separate items.
Pack the 3L, 6L, or 9L Sling inside the backpack. 1 piece, up to 15 lbs, max 21.7 x 15 x 8.7 in.
2 pieces allowed: backpack as main bag, any Sling as your second briefcase/personal item, up to 15 lbs each.
Fits Emirates' 21.7 x 15 x 8.7 in limit. Economy's 15 lbs cap is tight, so weigh it packed before you fly.
Slides inside the backpack in Economy, or rides as the second piece in Business/First.
Best as the second piece in Business/First; check it fits inside the backpack comfortably if flying Economy.
Largest of the three — better suited to Business/First's second-piece allowance than to nesting inside the backpack.
Checked bags follow either Weight Concept (Asia/Europe/Middle East/Australasia) or Piece Concept (Americas/Africa) depending on your route — check your ticket before packing checked gear.
4. LATAM Airlines - South America
Best SANDMARC pairing: Backpack + any Hybrid Sling
Fare check: Basic/Promo fares exclude the overhead bag allowance — you'll need a Standard or Premium fare to bring the backpack on board.
Carry-on bag
21.7 x 13.8 x 9.8 in
Economy 26 lbs · Premium/Business 35 lbs
Personal item
17.7 x 13.8 x 7.9 in
Must fit under the seat
LATAM's official width limit is 13.7 in; the backpack is 14 in and passes standard bin checks.
Fits well under the 17.7 x 13.8 x 7.9 in personal item threshold.
Fits under the seat within the 17.7 x 13.8 x 7.9 in allowance. Room for a mirrorless setup plus a 12 in iPad.
Fits under the seat. Largest capacity — holds a full-frame DSLR with an extra lens plus a 14 in MacBook.
Max checked bag size: 62.2 linear in. Confirm your fare includes the overhead bag before relying on the backpack as carry-on.
5. Ethiopian Airlines - Africa
Best SANDMARC pairing: Backpack + any Hybrid Sling
Weight watch: Economy carries a strict 15 lbs weight cap on the carry-on bag — pack the backpack accordingly.
Carry-on bag
21.7 x 15.7 x 9 in
15 lbs, Economy
Personal item
1 small item
Backpack, purse, or laptop bag
Well within the 21.7 x 15.7 x 9 in size limit — weigh it packed to stay under Economy's 15 lbs cap.
Easily qualifies as the additional small personal item, Economy or Cloud Nine.
Qualifies as the personal item across both cabins. Room for a mirrorless setup plus a 12 in iPad.
Largest of the three, still clears as a personal item. Holds a full-frame DSLR with an extra lens plus a 14 in MacBook.
Max checked bag dimension: 62 linear in. Cloud Nine (Business) allows 2 carry-on pieces up to 15 lbs each if you want backpack + sling both as counted carry-ons.
6. Qantas - Oceania
Best SANDMARC pairing: Backpack + any Hybrid Sling
1 piece up to 22 lbs, or 2 pieces up to 31 lbs total.
1 carry-on piece only.
On domestic Australia routes, use it as your single 22 lbs piece or pair it with a sling under the 31 lbs two-piece total. On international Economy, it stands alone as your one 15 lbs carry-on.
Works as the personal item internationally, or the second piece domestically within the 31 lbs two-bag total.
Best on domestic routes or in Business/First internationally (2-piece allowance). Room for a mirrorless setup plus a 12 in iPad.
Largest capacity — best suited to domestic's 2-piece allowance or international Business/First's 2-piece carry-on rule. Holds a full-frame DSLR with an extra lens plus a 14 in MacBook.
International Business/First allow 2 carry-on pieces up to 15 lbs each — backpack + any sling both travel on board in those cabins.
