iPhone 18 Pro vs. iPhone Duo

Apple Gear
Apple's brand-new iPhone Duo introduces a dramatic redesign to the lineup. If you are looking to buy a new phone this year, deciding between Apple’s newest design or the performance-focused iPhone 18 Pro is an exciting choice. In this guide, we’ll help you figure out if the iPhone Duo is right for you or if the iPhone 18 Pro is the upgrade you’ve been waiting for.

The Design and Build

Right off the bat, design is one of the key differences between the two models. The iPhone 18 Pro features a standard diagonal 6.3-inch display, while the Duo features a diagonal 5.4-inch outer screen that unfolds into a larger diagonal 7.6-inch inner display. The iPhone Duo stands at 4.64 inches, with a closed width of 3.31 inches and opened 6.48 inches. The iPhone 18 Pro stands at 5.91 inches with a width of 2.83 inches.
The Duo’s hinge mechanism and display crease are major highlights: masterfully crafted by Apple, the fold feels remarkably smooth and seamless whether the device is open or in motion. When unfolded, the Duo measures just 0.21 inches thick, making it even slimmer than the 0.22-inch iPhone Air and officially Apple's thinnest iPhone to date.

Color options also set them apart: the Duo comes in Star White and Night Sky, whereas the iPhone 18 Pro is available in four finishes: Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy.
Despite offering significantly more screen real estate, the Duo isn't much heavier than Apple's flagship Pro models. The Duo weighs in at 8.99 ounces, compared to 8.78 ounces for the iPhone 18 Pro Max and 7.44 ounces for the standard iPhone 18 Pro.

The Camera: Photography

The camera on the iPhone 18 Pro features a triple-lens system with up to 8x optical zoom, enabled by its dedicated Telephoto lens. In contrast, the Duo features a dual-lens setup consisting of a 48 MP Main camera and a 48 MP Ultra Wide lens, both of which are also present on the iPhone 18 Pro. Because the Duo lacks a Telephoto lens, it cannot reach 4x or 8x optical zoom.
Additionally, the iPhone 18 Pro introduces variable aperture options unavailable on previous models or the Duo (ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, ƒ/4.0 on the Fusion Main camera). It also offers Pro Controls for lens aperture, shutter speed, white balance, a live histogram, and Apple ProRAW support, which is not available on Duo.

The Camera: Video

When comparing video performance, the iPhone 18 Pro significantly outperforms the iPhone Duo by offering a suite of professional-grade recording options unavailable on the base model. The 18 Pro features advanced formats such as Spatial video recording at 1080p (30 fps), ProRes video recording up to 4K at 120 fps with external recording, and ProRes RAW. Additionally, it provides industry-standard tools for advanced production workflows, including support for Apple Log 2, the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES), and Genlock frame sync.
A key addition to both devices is the upgraded Cinematic mode, which now lets you apply depth-of-field effects to standard videos even after capture. Both models also support 4K Dolby Vision stabilized time-lapse recording.

Unique to the Duo

Both the Duo and the iPhone 18 Pro stand out with their own distinct designs and capabilities. The Duo, in particular, offers several features that the iPhone 18 Pro simply cannot replicate due to its design. Tailored to its unique hardware, features like Duo Preview, which allow subjects to view themselves while being photographed, and Kid Cue display animations to grab kids' attention during family photos.
Enabled by the folding mechanism, this setup also lets the phone act as its own stand for capturing wide-angle photos and videos. Many users are already treating it like a mini iPad; if you value note-taking or digital drawing, its Apple Pencil compatibility makes it a compelling choice.

The Bottom Line

The Duo’s foldable design and build set it apart as Apple's most novel iPhone model. However, the iPhone 18 Pro remains superior for photography and videography. If you prioritize high-end camera capabilities and advanced manual settings, the iPhone 18 Pro is the right fit. But if you want an innovative form factor, seamless video creation tools, or an iPad-like experience in your pocket, the Duo is a standout contender.
